MESSAGE FROM DTR: As we gear up for another great year, lets’ avoid dwelling on what didn’t happen in 2012 and declare 2013 as a promising year for ourselves as well as our love ones. There’s so much we have to be thankful for and to look forward to. We would like to express our greatest appreciation to our clients, customers, fellow Realtors®, affiliates, etc. whom have contributed to DTR having a successful year in the real estate industry. We are super excited about all of the wonderful upcoming events that we’ll be involved in and are looking forward to good things ahead.

What are you looking forward to accomplish this year? Have you set your goals for 2013? What will you do differently to ensure you achieve positive results? Whichever path you choose to take, know consistency is the key behind success. Remember to treat others the way you desire to be treated and may each of you reading this message have an “extraordinary” year.

I am so proud to be an active member of the Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors (GBRAR). For several months now the board has offered new courses to help improve its member’s education as it relates to the real estate industry. It is an effort to adapt to the constant changes within our industry. I find the courses both refreshing and beneficial. I can appreciate the committee for the variety of courses being offered. I’m honored to be in the presence of knowledgeable professional who are willing to share that knowledge….. and what is even more amazing is even though you are not a member with GBRAR you can still take advantage of its opportunities.

Since becoming a member nearly five years ago, I didn’t always value the importance of the classes nor did I carve out the time to participate. If I was honest enough with myself, what I really was saying was furthering my education wasn’t important. Crazy, right? I didn’t have the correct tools to be the efficient agent I sought out to be. I can assure you that my thought process has changed a great deal. Over the years my attendance towards courses and industry based seminars has increased and it shows in both my work habits in my business structure.

I’ve recently attended a class on both Property Management and Marketing and I tell you I’ve taken so much from both classes. I’ve implemented some of the information I’ve retained from these courses and have seen a difference with the flow of my business.

Unless you have a great mentor in this business, I firmly believe not taking advantage of classes, seminars, business meetings, etc could hinder your level of success and business practice. The most successful and respected, top producing agents in this business are the ones who conduct the courses. The higher your level of knowledge and business practice, the more effective you will become diligently servicing your clients.

As Realtors® it’s imperative to our business to remain educated on changes relating technology, laws, rules and regulations. As I continue to take advantage of these various opportunities the Board offers, I will encourage my fellow Realtors® and business owners to do the same.

Real Estate Scam

Scams have been surfacing around the real estate industry for quite some time and now Baton Rouge is one of its present target areas! It’s been discovered, that there are scam artist posing as homeowners attempting to lure innocent citizens into becoming their victims to steal their funds.

How are they doing it? The scam artists pull home listings from various websites and adjust it as their own and list the homes as rental properties. They allure you with attractive photographs of properties that may or may not be on the market for rent. Once you respond to their article, they will ask for personal information, tell you that they want you as a tenant and request you to wire your deposit check. Please understand this is not a normal process!!!!

What you should know? As a licensed Broker, I highly recommend you to speak with your local Realtor® or Property Manager about standard procedures in renting property. Most property owners will not ask you to wire deposit checks to them before actually viewing the property, signing a legal contract and having a face to face visit with themselves or their property manager. If you suspect any suspicious behavior, you should immediately contact your police department and news station. Unfortunately, acts like this almost never get caught, however shinning the light on their illegal actions will at least help the public become more cautious and aware of bogus transactions.
